No matter how many books you read, no matter how much advice your given, no matter how long you have to wait for that little bundle of joy to arrive, motherhood is one of those things that you're never quite prepared for. You just dive into it and learn by trial and error exactly how to keep your head above water. You do the very best you can and pray that it's enough.
One of the best things about motherhood is that you suddenly become a seasoned pro at each and every profession that once made an appearance on your "What I Want To Be When I Grow Up" list. As a chef, you learn new recipes to adeptly incorporate healthy vegetables into your children's favorite meals (often without their knowledge). You become a race car driver, as you hurry to pick up your children from school on time. You doctor bloody cuts, perform surgery on splinters and nurse your sick children back to health. When your children misbehave or break the rules you are the lawyer, jury and judge on the case. You become an award-winning actress, keeping a straight face when your three-year-old spouts his first curse word, and you play the part of stand-up comedian to make your baby laugh through her tears.
If mothers were actually compensated for for their time and talents, their annual salaries would certainly rival most professional athletes. Funny how the world works sometimes, isn't it?
Yet even if we will never make millions of dollars or receive standing ovations for our hard work, we mothers wouldn't trade our jobs for anything.
This week, the I Heart Faces Photo Challenge is "Motherhood" and this photo jumped out at me immediately as I became a hair stylist for my daughter this past week--definitely not a profession I ever imagined myself jumping into! The things we do for our children!
This Mother's Day, I hope you will take the time to appreciate the mothers in your life. I don't know that it's even possible to thank them for all they have done, but it sure doesn't hurt to try. Happy Mother's Day!!!
Be sure to head over to the I Heart Faces website to check out all the other amazing Motherhood entries.
